Health Level 7 (HL7) International is a subset of standards that are set by an international committee on health care database communication and exchange of information. HL7 serves as the supporting “language” that allows interfacing between electronic health systems. In modern times, this is the standard of healthcare communication.
HL7 is series of codes or messages are routed between a framework of systems in order to send and receive data parcels. In essence, this data is organized and reconstructed from sender to receiver in a way that is understood by the system. The system can be anything from an electronic health record or even a insurance company’s patient database. Health Level 7 is the international set of standards that ensure organizations communicate in an effective way. Essentially, HL7 shares data across two or more platforms in an easy and concise way. Importantly, HL7 is now the way your health information is securely shared across all connected databases.
Types of Health Level 7 (HL7) Communication include:
- EHR-PHR System Models
- “Clinical Document Architecture” (CDA), like documents such as chart notes or transition of care documents (TOC)
- “Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources” (FHIR), using API technology to create add-ons on existing EHR systems (e.g. 3rd party softwares)
